About this Training

Water–Energy–Food–Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus — WEFE4MED / PRIMA

As part of the WEFE4MED Project, funded by the PRIMA Programme, CAWTAR has developed an online training programme consisting of four interactive modules dedicated to the Water–Energy–Food–Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus.

This training provides an understanding of how water, energy, food and ecosystems are closely interconnected, and why their management requires an integrated approach based on cross-sectoral coordination, the identification of synergies, the management of trade-offs and the participation of different stakeholders.

The programme is particularly intended for practitioners, researchers, media professionals, policymakers, local authorities, civil society organisations and other actors engaged in sustainable development and resource management across the Mediterranean region.

The Four Training Modules

The four modules follow a progressive learning pathway, starting with an understanding of the WEFE Nexus, followed by its governance, innovative approaches to integrated resource management, and finally the integration of gender and social inclusion.

Module 1
Understanding the WEFE Nexus

Discover the foundations of the Water–Energy–Food–Ecosystems Nexus, the interdependencies between these resources, and the principles of coordination, synergy, trade-off management and co-construction required for sustainable, resilient and low-carbon resource management.

Module 2
Governance, Community Engagement and Citizen Science

Explore the principles of WEFE Nexus governance, the role of different stakeholders, communities of practice and civil society, as well as the contribution of citizen science to participatory, transparent and sustainable resource management.

Module 3
Innovative Approaches and Integrated Resource Management

Discover the principles of integrated resource management and the potential of new technologies and innovative approaches — artificial intelligence, Big Data, remote sensing, smart agriculture, renewable energy, circular economy and nature-based solutions — to strengthen the resilience of WEFE systems.

Module 4
Gender and Social Inclusion in the WEFE Nexus

Analyse how gender, social inclusion and power relations influence access to, control over and governance of WEFE resources, and explore how women, youth and marginalised groups can be integrated into more equitable and inclusive decision-making processes.

By the End of the Training

By completing the four modules, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of the WEFE Nexus and will be better prepared to:

  • analyse the interdependencies between water, energy, food and ecosystems;
  • identify synergies, trade-offs, risks and resource-use conflicts;
  • contribute to participatory and integrated governance and planning mechanisms;
  • identify technological, organisational and nature-based solutions adapted to Nexus challenges;
  • integrate gender and social inclusion into the governance and sustainable management of resources.

An Interactive Learning Approach

Each module combines learning content, examples, case studies, exercises and pre- and post-training questionnaires to assess learning outcomes and facilitate the application of concepts to practical situations.
